Specialized RV Insurance Considerations

Best Rate RV Loans and Motor Home Financing Img

Owning an RV isn't like owning a car. That’s why RV insurance is different from standard auto insurance. If you are looking for a quote on RV insurance, make sure the rate you are given is from a company that has specialized coverage that is essential to RV'ers.

When you're shopping for the lowest price for RV Insurance, you need to consider what the best value will be in the long run. This means considering the right combination of price, specialized coverage tailored for your RV and claims handling expertise in the event of a loss.

Remember that the cheapest policy today may be the most costly tomorrow if you face a major claim or even the total loss of your RV and its contents.

For instance, choosing to insure your RV under a standard auto policy can leave you exposed. Auto policies are not designed to insure the specialized needs of your RV. This becomes clear in the event of a loss as in some cases even minor claims can dramatically increase your premium if your RV is insured on a standard auto policy.

RV insurance policies vary by company. Here are some specialized RV insurance coverage areas that policies may offer you, which you won't find in a standard auto policy:

Agreed Value: Locks in the value of your classic coach or bus conversion up front with a qualified appraisal.

Total Loss Replacement: Ensures that you get a new comparable RV if you have a total loss in the first five model years. For RVs six model years or older, the purchase price of the coach would be paid. This valuable coverage protects your investment from the effects of depreciation.

Personal Contents Coverage: Covers items that you take onboard your RV -- such as house wares, tools, clothing, and sporting equipment-for their full replacement value. Although these items may be covered by your homeowners policy, typically only 10% of your homeowners coverage extends to off-premise property. That may not be enough to cover the items in your RV.

Unlimited Towing & Roadside Assistance: Provides sign-and-drive coverage 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. Includes battery jumpstarts, fuel delivery, flat tire change, lockout service, and winching and towing for mechanical or electrical breakdown. If the coverage isn't unlimited, be sure that you feel it is at least adequate to what may be required in the event that you need to use it.

Disappearing Deductibles: Reduces your comprehensive and collision deductibles by 25% (or a similar amount) for each year that you remain claim-free. If a loss occurs after four claim-free years, you would normally pay no deductible.

Emergency Expense Allowance: Reimburses you for expenses incurred following an accident or other covered loss. Pays for hotels, transportation or even a ticket home if your coach is permanently incapacitated, or for an extended amount of time.

Full-Timer Coverage: Provides comprehensive personal liability, stored personal contents, and additional living expense coverage for those living full-time in their RV.

Whereas some insurance companies may treat your RV like an automobile, if you are the owner of an RV, you should find an insurance agent or broker who will recognize your special needs as an RV owner.
